Around the League: Panasonic, Fujitsu remain unbeaten; Obic stays alive

Super 9 2nd Stage, Week 1

 

Panasonic Impulse 38, Asahi Beer Silver Star 14: Ben Dupree rushed for 140 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries and the Panasonic defensive line harried Mason Mills into three interceptions as the Impulse (6-0) rolled past Asahi Beer (4-2) at Yokohama Stadium. Tetsuo Takata completed 16 of 22 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns as Panasonic took a major step toward returning to the final stage after missing out in 2014. Mills, who was sacked three times, finished the day 24 of 46 for 249 yards, with two touchdowns in the first half. But his interception, by defensive lineman Wataru Takeda on an reckless shovel pass deep in Asahi Beer territory with 2:24 left in the second quarter, led to a 4-yard touchdown pass by Takata to Tatsuya Tonka to give Panasonic a 28-14 lead at halftime. Dupree scored on runs of 1, 8 and 41 yards. Eita Saeki kicked a 25-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for the Impulse’s final points.

 

Obic Seagulls 34, IBM BigBlue 26: Shun Sugawara passed for 226 yards and a touchdown and burly short-yardage specialist Asaki Mochizuki rushed for two touchdowns as Obic kept their chances alive of making the final stage by upending IBM at Yokohama Stadium to leave both teams at 4-2. Keisuke Shimazu had two of Obic’s three interceptions off IBM quarterback Kevin Craft, who completed 33 of 50 passes for 337 yards and two touchdowns. Takuto Hara scored on a 24-yard run and Sugawara threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Noriaki Kinoshita in the first quarter, and Mochizuki scored his first TD from the 4 in the second quarter as Obic took a 24-13 lead at halftime. Tomokazu Sueyoshi rushed for two touchdowns in the first half for IBM. Craft, who was sacked three times, connected with John Stanton on a 51-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and added a 5-yarder to Atsushi Uehiro with 4:45 left in the game. Takeshi Nagao made two of three field goal attempts for the Seagulls.

 

Fujitsu Frontiers 28, Elecom Kobe Finies 7: Colby Cameron threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns as East Division champion Fujitsu (6-0) defeated Elecom Kobe (3-3) at Osaka’s Expo Flash Field. Gino Gordon, who lost a fumble on Fujitsu’s opening drive, scored the first touchdown on a 6-yard run. Cameron, who completed 18 of 26 passes, threw touchdown passes of 10 yards to Sei Kyo and 38 yards to Takeshi Akiyama in the second quarter, and added a 23-yarder to Junpei Yoshimoto in the third quarter. Elecom’s lone score came when linebacker Takayuki Kurata returned a Kei Goto fumble 42 yards in the fourth quarter. The Finies piled up 374 yards of total offense and dominated time of possession (43:03 to 16:57), but saw one first-quarter drive end when a Keijiro Kasuya pass was intercepted by cornerback Al-Rilwan Adeyami in the end zone. Hidetaka Nakano missed a 39-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter.
