The defending champion Fujitsu Frontiers and the IBM BigBlue advanced to the Japan X Bowl on Dec. 18 at Tokyo Dome with thrilling victories in their respective playoff semifinals on Sunday.

Quarterback Colby Cameron scored on a 1-yard run early in the first quarter and the Frontiers’ defense made that hold up as Fujitsu blanked the Obic Seagulls 7-0 at Fujitsu Stadium Kawasaki.

The victory marked Fujitsu’s third over Obic in less than a year. The Frontiers beat the Seagulls 16-3 in last year’s Japan X Bowl for its second title in three years, then again 13-10 in overtime on Oct. 29 in this year’s regular-season finale.

In the other semifinal in Osaka, IBM earned a trip to championship game for just the second time in team history by rallying to knock off the previously unbeaten Panasonic Impulse 31-24 at Kincho Stadium.

Kevin Craft threw three touchdown passes in the second half for the BigBlue, who trailed 17-10 at halftime. IBM went ahead 24-17 in the third quarter before Panasonic, the 2015 league champion, tied it early in the fourth on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Ben Anderson to Takuya Tonka. Craft’s 7-yard TD toss to Ryuki Suzuki then put IBM ahead to stay.

The Japan X Bowl will be a rematch of last year’s playoff semifinal, which Fujitsu won 28-26 on a last-second field goal. Fujitsu will be playing in the Japan X Bowl for the fifth straight year, while IBM’s only other appearance came in 2014, when it lost to Fujitsu 44-10, which gave the Frontiers their first-ever title.
