Flash news: Fujitsu defends crown with record-setting rout of IBM in Japan X Bowl

By Ken Marantz

TOKYO (Dec. 18)—Colby Cameron threw for 306 yards and four touchdowns and ran for two more, and the Fujitsu Frontiers rolled to a record-setting 63-23 victory over the IBM BigBlue in the Japan X Bowl to successfully defend their X-League title.

Teruaki Clark Nakamura hauled in seven catches for a Japan X Bowl-record 203 yards with one touchdown to earn the MVP award for the Frontiers, who led 21-7 after the first quarter and 35-13 at halftime.

Fujitsu’s point total before the crowd of 22,953 at Tokyo Dome eclipsed the previous Japan X Bowl record set in 1995 when the Matsushita Denko Impulse routed the Recruit Seagulls 54-20.

The 40-point margin of victory was also the most ever in the 31-year history of the championship game, topping a record that had stood for 26 years. The Onward Oaks set the previous mark of 39 when they beat the Sunstar Finies 49-10 in 1991.

Fujitsu, the first team to ever appear in the Japan X Bowl five consecutive years, won its second straight title and third overall. IBM was denied a first-ever ever championship in its second trip to the title game. Fujitsu defeated IBM 44-10 in 2014 for its first-ever title.

Cameron, who finished 17 of 23 passing and had rushing touchdowns of 1 and 54 yards, connected with Nakamura on a 74-yard touchdown pass. It was long passes to Nakamura that set up Cameron for two short TD tosses to Sei Kyo and another to Yuya Fukui.

Rookie Seiya Inokuma got the Fujitsu ball rolling by returning the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. The Fujitsu defense, which had three interceptions and forced a fumble, added to the tally when linebacker Trashaun Nixon returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown.

IBM kicker Toshiki Sato also earned a place in the record books. Among his three field goals, he kicked a 50-yarder, which broke the record for longest of 47 yards that was shared by three others—most recently Fujitsu’s current kicker, Hidetetsu Nishimura, who did it in 2014.

Ryo Takagi scored on a 12-yard run and Tomokazu Sueyoshi broke free on a 49-yard run to account for IBM’s touchdowns.

IBM’s Kevin Craft, who shared some of the quarterbacking duties with Yuki Masamoto, completed 18 of 33 passes for 193 yards with one interception. Masamoto was 6 of 11 for 43 yards and two interceptions.

The game featured the first-ever use of video review in an official Japan league game. Both reviews confirmed the rulings of the field, one a fumble by Cameron when he was hit bringing his arm back to pass, and the other a pass reception.
